A Short History of Palace Computer Center One day in May of 1983 three boxes arrived at 419 N. 8th. Street in Garden city, Kansas. These three boxes contained the beginning of the new business. Computers…. ComputerTek was the name chosen for this budding new business by Dwight Smith, owner and Greg Smith (his son who was 17 at the time). As the three boxes were sold, more boxes started arriving. The business was growing and at least three to four computers were being sold per month. In November, 1983 the business moved to the newly built Hilton Plaza which was located north the then Hilton Inn (now the Clarion Inn). Office supplies were added and the name changed to ComputerTek Office Products. ComputerTek Office Products became the authorized Xerox Sales Agent for southwest Kansas and sold computers, copiers and office supplies. In April, 1985 ComputerTek Office Products signed with ValCom of Omaha, Nebraska as a franchise and the name changed to ValCom Computer Center. This allowed the store to carry IBM and Compaq Computer systems. Classes were held in accounting software, farm accounting software and word processing courses. In March, 1993 ValCom of Omaha changed their name to InaCom, Inc. we changed our name to Inacom Information Systems to stay in line with our franchise partner. Inacom filed bankruptcy on June 12, 2000. As we were no longer associated with Inacom as a franchisee, and due to the changing business practices in the industry, we elected to changed our name to Palace Computer Center as of August 1, 2000. In August 1999, Dwight sold the business to his children, Robin Ford and Greg Smith. Greg had been with the company since it’s beginning and Robin joined in the spring of 1991. Business continued in the strong tradition Dwight had started, providing quality products and services to customers while providing a family atmosphere for the employees of the company. As the industry changed, Palace Computer Center changed with it. Most systems sold today are custom built in our build center. The focus of our company is to provide quality products and services at a reasonable price to our valued customers. Palace Computer Center takes pride in offering its’ services to the individual consumer, businesses, government organization, and the education market. Palace Computer Center is active on dealer councils in the computer industry. Palace Comptuer Center is located at 1816 Palace Drive, Palace Center, Garden City, Kansas 67846. |
