On a day in May of 1983 three lone boxes arrived at 419 N. 8th. Street in Garden City, Kansas. These three boxes contained the beginning of a new business. Computers ... ...
ComputerTek was the name chosen for the new business by Dwight Smith as owner and Greg Smith (His 17 year old son). As these three boxes were sold, more boxes started arriving. The business was growing and at least three to four computers were being sold per month.
In November, 1983 the business moved to the newly built Hilton Plaza which was located north of the then Hilton Inn. Office supplies were added and the name changed to ComputerTek Office Products. ComputerTek Office Products became the authorized Xerox Sales Agent for southwest Kansas and sold computers, copiers and office supplies. More staff was added.
In April, 1985 ComputerTek Office Products signed with ValCom of Omaha, Nebraska as a franchise and the name changed to ValCom Computer Center. This allowed us to carry IBM and Compaq Computer systems. More staff was added. Classes were held in accounting software, farm accounting software and word processing courses. More computers were sold and more staff added.
In August, 1988 we purchased a ValCom store in Dodge City, Kansas.
In March, 1993 ValCom of Omaha changed their name to InaCom, Inc. Our firm then adapted the same name to be known as InaCom Information Systems. More products were added and more staff added. Inacom filed bankruptcy on June 12, 2000. We elected to change our name to Palace Computer Center as of August 1, 2000.
Today Palace Computer Center is located at 1816 Palace Drive, Palace Center, Garden City, Kansas.
